Coats disease

Coats disease is a rare eye condition that affects the retina. It is marked by abnormal blood vessels in the retina (retinal telangiectasia) that leak fluid. This leakage leads to the buildup of material under or within the retina (exudates), which can eventually cause the retina to detach. In many cases, the condition occurs in young children and usually affects just one eye. This disease is considered idiopathic, meaning the exact cause is not known, and it typically appears as an isolated condition in otherwise healthy individuals. The unusual changes in the retina are the main features that define the condition, and they can lead to complications such as vision loss in the affected eye.

People with Coats disease may experience changes in their vision. The abnormal blood vessels in the retina can leak fluid and other materials, leading to the buildup of deposits. Over time, these changes can cause the retina to detach and may result in vision loss in the affected eye.

Coats disease is described as an idiopathic disorder, which means its exact cause is not known. It is typically an isolated, unilateral condition that manifests in otherwise healthy young children. Although a gene labeled CTD is noted in available sources, there is no clear evidence linking it directly as a cause for this disease.
