Wolfram-like syndrome

Wolfram-like syndrome is a rare endocrine condition that is mainly marked by a triad of symptoms including adult-onset diabetes mellitus, progressive hearing loss, and juvenile-onset optic atrophy. A key point is that hearing loss usually starts in the first decade of life and tends to affect low to moderate frequencies. In addition to these primary symptoms, some individuals may experience psychiatric issues such as anxiety, depression, or even hallucinations, as well as sleep disorders. Importantly, unlike Wolfram syndrome, Wolfram-like syndrome does not include the endocrine or cardiac findings observed in that condition.

People with Wolfram-like syndrome most often show signs of adult-onset diabetes mellitus, progressive hearing loss that typically begins in childhood, and/or juvenile-onset optic atrophy. In rare cases, psychiatric symptoms like anxiety, depression, and hallucinations, along with sleep disturbances, have been reported.

Wolfram-like syndrome is linked with changes in the WFS1 gene. The pattern of inheritance is autosomal dominant. This genetic aspect distinguishes it from similar conditions and contributes to the development of its specific symptoms.
