Aland island eye disease

Aland island eye disease is an X-linked recessive retinal condition. It is characterized by reduced pigmentation in the back of the eye (fundus hypopigmentation) and lower than normal visual sharpness. People with this condition may experience other vision challenges such as nystagmus (rapid involuntary eye movements), astigmatism (irregular curvature of the eye lens), progressive axial myopia (increasing nearsightedness), defective dark adaptation, and protanopia (difficulty perceiving red light).

The common signs of this condition include decreased visual acuity, abnormal eye movements (nystagmus), astigmatism, and worsening nearsightedness over time. Other symptoms include difficulty adjusting when moving from bright to dark environments and color vision issues, particularly with red light.

Aland island eye disease is caused by mutations in the CACNA1F gene. The condition is inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern, which means the gene mutation is passed through the X chromosome.
