Huntington disease-like 3

Huntington disease-like 3 is a rare neurodegenerative condition that usually starts in childhood. People with this condition experience a progressive decline in neurological function. The disease is considered similar to Huntington disease but has its own distinct features. This condition is marked by a mix of movement problems and neurological symptoms. People may show signs of both pyramidal and extrapyramidal abnormalities, which affect motor control, and there can be changes seen on brain imaging, including progressive loss of brain tissue in the frontal cortex and caudate regions.

The symptoms of Huntington disease-like 3 include a variety of movement problems. These include involuntary movements such as chorea, dystonia, and ataxia. There may also be gait instability, spasticity, and seizures. In some cases, mutism can occur. Such symptoms reflect a decline in neurological function over time.

Huntington disease-like 3 has a genetic basis. Mutations in the HDL3 gene have been associated with the condition, and it is described as autosomal recessive. This means that the condition can be inherited when both copies of the gene in each cell have changes.
