Sheehan syndrome

Sheehan syndrome is an uncommon condition that affects people who have had severe bleeding after giving birth. Heavy blood loss can lead to low blood pressure and cause damage to the pituitary gland, which is responsible for producing important hormones. This condition usually becomes noticeable in the postpartum period. People with this condition might experience problems such as failing to start lactation, feeling very tired, and having low blood pressure. Over time, menstrual cycles can also be affected, leading to amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods).

Common symptoms of Sheehan syndrome include the inability to begin lactation, persistent fatigue, low blood pressure, and eventual absence of menstrual periods. In some instances, the condition may progress to adrenal failure, making close monitoring important.

Sheehan syndrome is caused by severe postpartum hemorrhaging. This significant blood loss leads to prolonged low blood volume, which in turn reduces blood flow to the pituitary gland and results in tissue damage (ischemic necrosis). There is no known genetic component associated with this condition.

The primary treatment for Sheehan syndrome is hormone replacement therapy. Starting hormone replacement soon after symptoms appear can help manage the condition effectively. In cases where symptoms are severe, additional treatments may be needed to address complications such as adrenal failure.

The outlook for people with Sheehan syndrome is most favorable when treatment begins early. Prompt hormone replacement therapy can help manage the symptoms and improve quality of life. However, in very severe cases, there is a risk of complications like adrenal failure if the condition is not managed properly.
