May-Thurner syndrome

May-Thurner syndrome is a condition where there is compression of the iliac vein. This compression reduces blood flow in the vein and in the left lower extremity. The compression is most often caused by the right common iliac artery pressing on the left common iliac vein against the fifth lumbar vertebra, which is a vascular malformation. People with this condition may experience complications such as swelling (edema) in the left leg, pain, deep venous thrombosis in the iliofemoral region, and postthrombotic syndrome. Understanding the basic anatomy behind this syndrome helps in recognizing the symptoms and the potential impact on blood flow in the affected leg.

People with this condition may experience left leg edema (swelling), pain, and deep venous thrombosis in the iliofemoral region. Some may also develop postthrombotic syndrome, which is a long-term complication following blood clots.
