Duane retraction syndrome

Duane retraction syndrome is a condition present from birth that affects the movement of the eyes. People with this condition have difficulty moving their eyes horizontally and may experience the eyes pulling back into the socket and the opening of the eyelids narrowing when trying to look inward. This condition is a form of strabismus and is related to issues in the nerve development responsible for moving the eyes. It is important for caregivers to understand that this condition is congenital, meaning it is present at birth.

Common signs of this condition include limited horizontal eye movement, eye retraction (where the eye appears to pull back into the socket), and narrowing of the space between the eyelids when looking inward.

Duane retraction syndrome is caused by a failure in the development of the abducens nerve that normally helps control the movement of the eyes. This developmental issue can lead to additional complications such as amblyopia, sometimes known as lazy eye.
