Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy

Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy, also known as Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD), is a condition that affects the back layer of the cornea. In people with this condition, abnormal bumps called guttae form on a thickened membrane known as Descemet membrane. These changes can lead to swelling (edema) of the cornea and slowly reduce vision over time. This condition is the most common type of posterior corneal dystrophy. The buildup of guttae and resulting corneal swelling gradually impact a person’s ability to see clearly. Early observations suggest that the vision decline progresses slowly, making regular eye exams important for managing change over time.

People with Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy may experience a gradual loss of vision. They often develop corneal edema, which is swelling caused by fluid buildup. These changes in the cornea can lead to blurred vision and discomfort, especially in conditions that strain the eyes.
