When this process fails, clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X are under-carboxylated, leading to bleeding problems, and vitamin K–dependent proteins that stabilize elastic fibers are also affected, resulting in lax skin and vessel changes. Inheritance is autosomal recessive: a child must receive one altered copy of GGCX from each parent to be affected. Parents who each carry a single altered copy are usually healthy but have a 25 percent chance, with every pregnancy, of having an affected child. This condition is more common when parents share a common ancestor because relatives are more likely to carry the same rare variant. Genetic counseling is recommended for carrier testing, family planning, and discussion of reproductive options.

At present, care focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications. People with significant bleeding tendencies benefit from close monitoring by hematology specialists; advance planning before dental work or surgery can markedly reduce bleeding risk.
