Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a rare bone condition in which an idiopathic necrotic lesion develops in the subchondral bone, potentially forming a sequestrum that may detach and become a loose body within the affected joint. The condition primarily involves the knee, ankle, and elbow and can progress to secondary osteoarthritis. Prevalence is estimated at 1–5 in 10,000.
Very frequent features (80–99% of cases) include limitation of joint mobility, joint swelling, joint stiffness, knee abnormalities, and joint pain (arthralgia). Frequent manifestations (30–79%) include osteopenia, abnormal joint morphology, elbow range-of-motion restrictions, joint hypermobility, premature osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and abnormal musculoskeletal physiology. Gait disturbance and quadriceps muscle atrophy occur occasionally (5–29%).
